WHY STEPHEN HAWKING IS WRONG ABOUT GOD NOT CREATING THE UNIVERSE

The Grand Design?

Stephen Hawking’s latest book is entitled The Grand Design. However, the book’s conclusion is exactly the opposite – that the universe is not designed at all, but just popped into existence because of some fortuitous physical laws that just happen to produce universes at will.

Stephen Hawking has garnered a lot of admiration and respect as a brilliant physicist and cosmologist. His book, A Brief History of Time, is a bestseller for its ability to translate physics and cosmology into terms that a layman can understand. So, when he came out recently promoting his new book claiming, «There is a sound scientific explanation for the making of our world—no Gods required» a lot of people took notice. Is our understanding of physics really sufficient to conclude that we know everything necessary to explain the existence of everything?

What new theory?

In his new book, Hawking claims that the reason the universe needs no creator is due to a «new theory» called M-theory (where «M» stands for «membrane,» or just «m,» or «murky» or «missing»¹ depending upon one’s particular version of the theory). Originally promoted as «superstring» theory 20 years ago, it has evolved from «strings» to «membranes,» although all forms of the theory propose extra dimensions (11, in fact). However, M-theory is no single theory, but, rather, a number of theories through which one may obtain just about anything one wants. How one can test such a nebulous set of theories, which «predict» just about anything and everything, seems to be a problem.

M-theory: science or faith?

The nature of the universe requires that membranes from M-theory, if they exist at all, must be on the order of Planck length (10^–33 cm). Such a size is way less than microscopic or even well below subatomic particle sizes. In order to confirm such objects, one would need an accelerator on the order of 6,000,000,000,000,000 miles in circumference.² It would seem likely, therefore, that confirmation of M-theory, based upon observable data, is impossible. Do such a set of theories that predict everything and anything and are not testable through observational data really fall within the realm of science?

Whence the laws of physics?

Stephen Hawking says that the laws of physics guarantee that the universe can be created from nothing. The question he never answered was why those laws of physics exist? Although it is possible for things such as particles to pop into existence from «nothing,» it has never been shown that non-quantum-sized objects can perform such feats. Even if it were possible, why would it be expected that laws of physics that allow such events to occur would actually exist. Why wouldn’t a true nothing consist of no laws of physics and no possibility of anything popping into existence.

Conclusion

So, Stephen Hawking wants us to believe that a nebulous set of theories, which cannot be confirmed through observational data, absolutely establishes that an infinite number of diverse universes exist, having been created from laws of physics that just happen to allow this. John Horgan, a fellow atheist, says that the popularity of M-theory is the result of «stubborn refusal of enthusiasts to abandon their faith.»³ Is it not more likely that a super-intelligent, powerful Being invented the laws of physics that produced the universe? Skeptics always ask, «Who created God?» Maybe they already have the answer to that question – Nothing! After all, they seem to think that nothing is a powerful force for creating things!

Introducción

Stephen Hawking se ha ganado una gran admiración y respeto como un brillante físico y cosmólogo. Su libro, Una Breve Historia del Tiempo, es un éxito de ventas por su capacidad para traducir la física y la cosmología en términos que un profano pueda comprender. Así que, cuando salió recientemente la promoción de su nuevo libro, diciendo: «Hay una explicación científica sólida para la producción de nuestro mundo—no se requiere de dioses», y mucha gente le hizo caso. ¿Es suficiente nuestra comprensión de la física para concluir que sabemos todo lo necesario para explicar la existencia de todo?

El Gran Diseño?

El último libro de Stephen Hawking se titula El Gran Diseño. Sin embargo, la conclusión del libro es exactamente lo contrario —que el universo no está diseñado en absoluto, sino que sólo vino a la existencia debido a algunas leyes físicas fortuitas que simplemente ocurren para producir universos a voluntad.

¿Qué nueva Teoría?

En su nuevo libro, Hawking afirma que la razón por la que el universo no necesita creador se debe a una «nueva teoría» llamada Teoría-M (donde «M» significa «membrana», o simplemente «m» u «oscuro» o «perdido»1 según la versión particular de cada uno de la teoría). Inicialmente promocionada como la teoría de las «supercuerdas» de hace 20 años, ha evolucionado de «cadenas» a «membranas», aunque todas las formas de la teoría proponen dimensiones extras (11, de hecho). Sin embargo, la teoría M no es una teoría única, sino, más bien, una serie de teorías a través de las cuales se pueden obtener casi cualquier cosa que uno quiera. Sobre cómo puede uno poner a prueba semejante conjunto de teorías que «predicen» cualquier cosa y todo, parece ser un problema.

Teoría M: ciencia o fe?

La naturaleza del universo requiere que las membranas de la teoría M, si es que existen, deban ser del orden de la longitud de Planck (10-33 cm). Este tamaño es mucho menos que microscópica, o incluso muy por debajo de los tamaños de las partículas subatómicas. Para confirmar los objetos, uno necesitaría un acelerador en el orden de 6.000.000.000.000.000 millas en circumferencia.2 Parece probable, por tanto, que la confirmación de la teoría M, basada en datos observables, es imposible. ¿Realmente entran en el reino de la ciencia semejante conjunto de teorías que predicen todo y cualquier cosa, y que no son comprobables a través de los datos de observación?

¿De dónde las leyes de la física?

Stephen Hawking dice que las leyes de la física garantizan que el universo puede ser creado de la nada. La cuestión que él nunca contestó fue por qué esas leyes de la física existen? Aunque es posible que las cosas como las partículas salieran a la existencia de «nada», nunca se ha demostrado que los objetos de tamaño no cuántico puedan realizar tales proezas. Incluso si fuera posible, ¿por qué se podría esperar que las leyes de la física que permiten que tales eventos ocurran realmente existiesen. ¿Por qué no consistiría una verdadera nada de ninguna de las leyes de la física y ninguna posibilidad de que algo reventara a la existencia?

Conclusión

Por lo tanto, Stephen Hawking quiere que creamos que un conjunto de teorías nebulosas, que no pueden ser confirmadas por los datos de observación, establecen absolutamente que un número infinito de diversos universos existan, habiendo sido creados a partir de leyes de la física que simplemente ocurrieron para permitir esto. John Horgan, un colega ateo, dice que la popularidad de la teoría M es el resultado del «rechazo obstinado de los entusiastas a abandonar su fe.» 3 ¿No es más probable que un ser súper inteligente y poderoso inventó las leyes de la física que produjeron el universo? Los escépticos siempre preguntan: «¿Quién creó a Dios?» Tal vez ya tenemos la respuesta a esa pregunta – ¡Nada! Después de todo, ellos parecen creer que nada es una fuerza poderosa para la creación de las cosas!
